Most talk about cruise discounts is really talk about sales: a percentage off this month, a free drink package next month. Those come and go. Underneath them sits a second, steadier layer — fares that depend on who you are. Serve or served in the military? Over 55? A police officer, firefighter or paramedic? Live in a state where a line is chasing local bookings? Work for an airline? Each of these can unlock a rate the general public never sees.
Cruise Discounters is a plain-language guide to that second layer. For each group we explain which lines publish a program, who exactly qualifies, what you must show, whether the people in your cabin share the rate, and how it fits with whatever sale is running. Every program named on this site was checked against the cruise line’s own pages or press releases. Where a line publishes no standing program, we say so rather than guess.

The Main Types of Cruise Discounts
| Discount | Who it is for | What you usually show | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Military and veteran rates | Active duty, Guard and Reserves, retirees, many veterans, some spouses | Service ID, retiree ID, DD 214 or online verification | Military cruise discounts |
| Senior rates | At least one guest aged 55 or older, on selected sailings | Proof of age (passport or driver’s license) | Cruise discounts for seniors |
| Police, fire, EMS and first responders | Active or retired responders; programs vary on nurses | Badge or employment ID plus photo ID, or online verification | Nurses and first responders |
| Resident rates | People living in a named state or province | Government ID showing the address | Resident and interline rates |
| Interline (airline) rates | Airline and certain travel-industry employees and retirees | Airline ID badge or retiree letter | Resident and interline rates |
| Past-guest offers | Anyone who has sailed with the line | Your loyalty number | Frequent Cruiser Program |
| Group rates | Cabins booked together under one group contract | Nothing personal — it is the booking that qualifies | Group Cruise Planner |
Teachers are a newer group: Norwegian Cruise Line, for one, added a teacher discount verified through ID.me in 2026. Students, clergy and other professions occasionally see offers too, but rarely as standing programs, so we cover them only where a line has published one.
Four Rules That Apply to Nearly Every Restricted Rate
It must be selected
An eligibility fare is a separate rate code. If you book the public fare and mention your service at the pier, nothing changes. Choose the rate when the booking is made, or ask your advisor to.
It must be proven
Lines check. Royal Caribbean’s own FAQ warns that a booking that does not meet a restricted program’s rules may be repriced to the lowest fare available that day, with the difference due before boarding.
It follows the cabin
The qualifying guest has to sail in the stateroom. Cabin-mates usually share the rate; a second cabin for the in-laws usually does not.
It is compared, not assumed
A restricted rate is not automatically lower than today’s sale fare. Price them side by side — sometimes the public promotion wins.
Onboard Credit Is Not the Same as a Lower Fare
Many advertised cruise discounts arrive as onboard credit — money to spend on the ship — rather than a lower price. Credit is genuinely useful if you would spend it anyway on drinks, Wi-Fi or excursions, but it does not reduce your deposit, your taxes or the amount your travel insurance has to cover, and unused promotional credit is often forfeited. Our page on onboard credit vs a price cut shows how to compare the two honestly.
For today’s actual sales — the line-wide promotions that sit on top of all this — see Wave Season for the big seasonal events and the live discount search on Cruising for Less.

What a Cruise Discounter Really Does
“Cruise discounters” used to mean agencies that undercut the cruise line’s price. Most major lines now run pricing policies that limit what agencies may advertise below the line’s own fares, so the value of a good agency has moved: finding the right rate code for you, checking eligibility fares against the current sale, holding group space, and re-pricing when fares drop. We explain the difference between real help and empty promises on our cruise discounters page.
Cruise Discounts: Quick Answers
Can I combine two cruise discounts?
Usually not two eligibility rates on the same cabin — a military rate and a senior rate, for example, are separate fares and you get one or the other. Many lines do let an eligibility rate sit alongside an onboard-credit promotion or a loyalty perk. The terms of each fare say what stacks.
Do my travel companions get my discount?
On the restricted rates we checked, the discount follows the stateroom: guests sharing the cabin with the qualifying person may get the rate, but friends in a second cabin generally do not unless a line’s program says otherwise.
Is a discounted fare always the cheapest fare?
No. A restricted rate is compared against everything else on sale that day, and a line-wide promotion can beat it. Price both before you book — that comparison is exactly what our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise do on every quote.
What proof do I need?
It depends on the rate: a military or service ID or DD 214, a badge plus a second photo ID, a document showing your home state, or online verification through a service such as ID.me. Bring the same proof to the pier; a booking that cannot be proven can be repriced.
